Chelsea will be looking for an instant response from there poor performance against West Brom at the weekend.

They play against a Porto side-have lost five of their eight Champions League games against the Blues – winning twice and drawing once. They have a worse record against one team – Real Madrid with six defeats.

Chelsea returns to winning ways, have won 75% of their matches against Portuguese opponents in this competition which includes nine wins so statistically we are looking at a tenth win tonight if all things go to plan for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Porto have only won one of their six games in the competition at the quarter-final mark – drawing once and losing the rest – since lifting the trophy under Jose Mourinho in 2003-04.

Their last such victory came against Bayern Munich in April 2015 but lost 7-4 on aggregate.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel may be defending and showing no signs of concern over Timo Werner’s form this season but the German but the faith needs to be repaid.

Tuchel may have a bizarre way of explaining his belief in Werner but the former Borussia Dortmund boss has clearly seen enough to see Werner can replicate the form that made him one of the most hotly desired transfer targets

PREDICTION

Porto have done exceptionally well to reach this stage of the Champions League but, actually, they’re hardly flying this season with the Liga NOS title now looking a tough ask.

Their first leg win over Juve shows they’re still capable of causing problems but the last thing they’d have wanted to see at the weekend was Chelsea’s shock loss to West Brom.

The Blues were woeful as the Baggies took them apart 5-2. They’ll now be all to aware of what can happen if they’re not at the races. It won’t happen twice within a few days.

Of course, it’s worth noting they were unbeaten in 15 prior to that loss; one defeat hardly means bad form. Finally, it’s almost guaranteed that Mason Mount comes back into the XI, which is a big boost.
