MATCH PREVIEW

The first game on Sunday in LaLiga comes from Vitoria where relegation threatened Alaves host a badly out of form Levante side. This feels like the perfect fixture at this stage in the campaign for a struggling team to have and Javi Calleja’s side will be desperate to take full advantage.

Alaves’ overall fortunes have taken a significant turn for the better since Calleja took over. They’d taken 8 points from 4 games heading into their six-pointer at Ipurua last time out. Key home wins over Huesca and Villarreal lifted them out of the danger zone but just when it looked as though Alaves were edging clear of trouble, they put in one of their worst performances of the entire season at Eibar.

A 3-0 loss to the league’s bottom club would have been tough to take as Kike’s fine hat-trick settled the Basque derby firmly in the home team’s favour. Alaves still head into this weekend outside of the relegation zone, but only by a point. Three points here would be a huge boost heading into next Tuesday’s relegation showdown with Elche.

Levante by contrast don’t have a huge amount to worry about. Their slim European hopes have long since faded but with 38 points on the board, they are in no danger of going down even if they lose this. Paco Lopez will be hoping to see a much better showing from his side though with his side giving off the distinct impression that they are drifting towards the end of the campaign and looking forward to their summer breaks.

It’s 6 defeats out of 7 and 4 straight losses for the Valencia club. Worryingly the goals have almost completely dried up too with only 2 scored during that period. That’s not like a Levante side that has been one of the most entertaining to watch in the Spanish top flight in recent years. Lopez has experimented a little in recent games but may revert to 4-4-2 here with a few more players available for this one.

PREDICTION

Levante seem to be on their summer break already and it’s not the first time they have drifted towards the end of the season having done the hard work to secure safety. Alaves suffered a miserable defeat last time out but they’ve been strong at home since the change in coach and may just have enough here to claim a priceless victory.

Bet Alaves to win with AH -0.25.
